"Hooked" On Bass Fishing at age 8!

I'll never forget the very first day I placed my hand on a fishing rod. It was early in the morning, very misty, very chilly. I was barely awake.

The only thing keeping me there and awake was the respect and admiration I had for my Grandpa. He was bigger than life to me with a deep belly laugh, twinkling eyes, and a ready sympathy whenever I got into trouble - which was often.

As Grandpa and I walked up the pier, the mists slowly parted and allowed me my first glimpse of the lake stretching out before us from horizon to horizon. The gentle slap-slapping of the waves only added to the wonder of the moment and the deep sparkling blue of the water. I was awestruck.

I ran to the edge of the pier and looked over the edge, and there was another wonderful sight---wow---a small dinghy bobbing gently with the slapping waves, tied up alongside the pier.

The excitement inside me was now zinging away, and I grabbed Grandpa's hand to help steady me down the few steps needed to get into the boat. I was wide awake now, and in my haste to get into the boat, I nearly pulled Grandpa down the steps on top of me.

So here we were at 5am that chilly day, warmed to the bone with the anticipation of a day of fishing, and ready and able to take it on, Grandpa and me and our little boat.

And that magical day went on and on, from the time we pulled away from the pier out to the middle of the lake, to the time we returned in the evening - hungry, exhausted and happy. My first day of fishing and being with Grandpa alone. I was aglow with happiness, and I often think of that magical day even now.

So what could top that first feeling of excitement on that wonderful day! You got it! We managed to catch the biggest fish in the whole lake (or so it seemed to my 8 yr. old eyes.) Yep, it looked like a whale to me ( it was a five pounder) and it wriggled all over the boat. Grandpa kept slapping me on the back and said I was such a great fisherman and he was so proud of me. I was bursting.........and.............

I've been a fisher ever since!

All my friends know I'm a fishing fanatic but most of them won't come with me when I invite them to go fishing with me.
